Dental Inlays and Onlays
Dental inlays and onlays are utilized when more than half of your tooth’s biting surface is damaged. They provide an alternative to traditional fillings and help maintain up to fifty percent of a natural tooth’s strength.

Inlays and onlays are bonded directly onto the teeth using special high-strength resins that can increase a tooth’s strength by 75 percent. As a result, they can last ten to thirty years, and in some cases, where the damage to the tooth is not extensive enough to merit an entire crown, onlays are a great alternative.
Inlays and onlays blend seamlessly with natural enamel, enhancing function and appearance. When the most conservative option fits your treatment plan, our doctors may suggest inlays and onlays for ultimate restoration. We invite you to visit our offices to learn more about dental inlays and onlays.

What are inlays and onlays?
Inlays and onlays are dental pieces crafted from porcelain, gold, or composite resin. They are attached to the damaged parts of the tooth. An inlay, similar to a filling, is placed inside the cusp tips of the tooth, while an onlay is a more extensive reconstruction that covers one or more cusps of the tooth.
In the past, gold was the popular choice for inlays and onlays, but recently, porcelain has gained popularity due to its strength and ability to match the natural color of teeth.

How are dental inlays and onlays applied?
Dental inlays and onlays are applied throughout two appointments. During the first visit, the dentist replaces the filling or removes the damaged or decaying area of the tooth. After preparing the tooth for the inlay or onlay, the dentist takes an impression of the tooth and sends it to a lab for fabrication. A temporary sealant is then applied to the tooth, and the next appointment is scheduled.
At the second appointment, the temporary sealant is removed, and the dentist ensures that the inlay or onlay fits correctly. If the fit is satisfactory, the inlay or onlay will be bonded to the tooth using a strong resin and polished to a smooth finish.

When should I consider a dental inlay or onlay?
A dental inlay fills grooves in a tooth and restores or repairs it after injury or decay has affected the cusp. Dental inlays made from gold are more durable than regular fillings from composite or amalgam.
A dental onlay is used to repair a tooth with more extensive damage that affects the cusp, tips, or biting surface. Onlays require a temporary solution while the final onlay is sent to a laboratory to be formed correctly.
